This is the kind of commercial that would play on WJAC-FM, and we'd hear it while lounging by the pool, or having a picnic at BETHCO PINES on the fabulous Quemahoning Reservoir. Sure, Rolling Rock isn't made in Latrobe anymore, and Bethco Pines is just a terrific summertime memory, but the memories (and the beer) are still pretty good."

Codified Ordinance - Johnstown Borough - 1861: To Sell or Vend

Codified Ordinance - Johnstown Borough - 1861: No person or persons shall be permitted to sell, sell or offer for sale, any fresh meat, poultry, butter, eggs, green fruit, grain, or vegetables in any part of the borough before nine o'clock on regular market mornings, except in or at the market house, under a penalty of not less than five dollars for each and every offense to both seller and buyer, except fresh beef, pork, veal, mutton, or lamb, by any quantity not less than a quarter, to, and for one person: PROVIDED, that merchants shall not hereby be prohibited from selling such articles as form part of their stock in trade: and, PROVIDED FURTHER, Butchers that rent and occupy one or more stalls in the market house, may sell fresh meats from their shops, stores, and place of business; and the butchers and others who do not rent or lease a stall in the market house, may sell fresh meat from their shops, stores, and places of business by paying a license of fifty dollars, all of said license fees to be pain semi-annually, in advance, to be collected by the market master; such shops, stores, ad places of business to be subject to the inspection of the market master, and to all the ordinances of the borough relating to markets, so far as the same may be applicable.

1907-08 Johnstown All-Stars

 

These players comprised the Johnstown All-Stars, recognized as the Eastern Amateur Basketball Champions of Pennsylvania in 1907-08. Johnstown was declared state co-champion with Reading, Eastern powerhouse. The All-Stars played the University of Pennsylvania, the intercollegiate champion, in the opening game played at the new Auditorium. A record crowd of more than 2,000 persons saw the game.

Memorial to Founder of Johnstown

 

This replica of Joseph Johns' log cabin home was moved to Suppes Park, Central Avenue, yesterday as a permanent memorial to the founder of Johnstown. It was donated to the city by Mrs. Marion (Dibert) Suppes, of 90 Valley Pike, widow of the late George Suppes. Mr. Suppes built it in 1900 as an exhibit for the city's 100th anniversary celebration. A plaque explaining its origin and its role in the centennial event will be placed on the cabin, according to Councilman P.J. Culliton, city parks director. The city will maintain the shrine, Mr. Culliton added. City workers moved the two-room cabin to the park yesterday on the eve of the date on which Joseph Johns laid out the original town site here 150 years ago. The cabin was used for many years as a children's playhouse.

Photo Engraving Done Here - 1953

 

Photo engraving - the process of reproducing pictures for printing - is another side in Johnstown's busy industrial field. The Conemaugh Engraving Company here operates one of the largest and most modern plants in the state. The above picture shows one of the first steps in the photo engraving process. The photo to be reproduced as a metal cut is recopied by this big camera to give it a screen (raised dots) for printing purposes. Adjusting the lens of the photo processing camera is Joseph Oravec, an employe of Ceco. This camera can make the reproduction three times as large as the original photo or reduce it to one-sixth of its size.

Turner's was started by some German immigrants who wanted a club of their own - that basically combined drinking and gymnastics and also in the early days....bowling.
