Lower Mill

VJ Repeat - I just love this picture. I have a couple different looks at the same area. You are looking down at what is now Roosevelt Blvd from up top Haws Refractory. The bridge in the foreground was for trains and it went straight to the mill. The second bridge is what would later become the Cambria City footbridge that has since been rebuilt.

Union Street School

The Union Street School was constructed in 1881. It was located at Union and Lincoln Streets and served as a high school until 1891 when it was changed over to an elementary school. It continued being used as a school until 1961 before it was finally torn down a few years later.

Delaware Avenue Underpass

VJ Repeat - dated November 14, 1915 as construction on the Delaware Avenue Underpass was wrapping up.
Far too many people were being hit by trains - since the line to Morrellville was street level. So it was decided to construct a series of underpasses to help keep accidents down by elevating the tracks. There were two major problems - first off, the trolleys couldn't go up Fairfield Avenue before this and secondly - people were gettting hit by passing trains since they had to cross the train tracks to take another trolley to the rest of Morrellville.
Wish I knew who that kid was on the right hand side. Mostly likely someone from either Pennsylvania or Virginia Avenue.

Sign of the time

From 1972 - work crews taking down the very large signs that used to line the streets of Johnstown. This is at the corner of Main and Bedford. The city changed the law on how big signs could be and how high and far they could stick out from a business.
