Never Forgotten! My father, all my uncles and many cousins and friends earned their livings there. Our lives centered around trhe mill and the area has never been the same since it's passing.
Perhaps it's demise was partially internal. My grandfather used to tell me stories about how common it was that guys would clock in and then leave to go fishing or something then come back at quitting time to clock back out. Everyone I knew that worked there (including MY family) would frequently steal a little something for themselves..pencils, pens, staplers...etc...Telling was a taboo, of course....bite the hand that feeds you.

ReplyDeleteYou are so correct Al but it was the white hats that had their cars on the inside of the gates and probably stole the big things...
ReplyDeleteMy grandfather worked there, too, and I remember he was laid off a lot. People forget that part.
ReplyDeleteMy dad used to tell me how many of the guys had their place to sleep on the job when they were working night turn.
