Trolley Time

Vintage Repeat - the trolley at the intersections of Decker, Strayer and Decker Avenue in Morrellville. It's just passing by Koch's, which I still find hard to believe that the building is no longer there. Koch's had the finest Birch Beer and STILL has the best Ham Salad in all of Johnstown.

  1. Somebody told me they had great subs too. Never had the chance to check out this place. That's when a neighborhood, was a neighborhood!

  2. Reading about the ham salad and subs at Koch's makes me think that maybe Lisa could expand this site for suggestions on the best locations in J-Town to eat. Ex: CK's Wings & Things on Ferndale Ave has some of the best wings. Over 1200 flavors...

  3. Lisa, that would be wonderful. I am sure that I eat at places and never tried their speciality. Another place that has good food such as a great fish sandwich is the Johnstown Inn on the Frankstown Road beside the old Pig & Whistle. I'll be waiting for your new addon to this site.

  4. Thanks, Mike for the info. I live in NJ and am planning a genealogy search trip to Johnstown for 2013 (trying to determine the best time of year and the lowest hotel rates). I will be writing these places down and putting them in my travel file. I love good food and supporting local small business - a perfect combination!

  5. I still cant believe this place is not here anymore. Once Clarks dairy on chandler ave closed, this was one of the most busiest places in upper Morrellville. My dad used to play all his lottery nos. there since the 70s and always had to stand in line because the place was so busy. Does anybody know why they went out of business, and then tore the building down? Yet there are old rundown buildings in cambria city still standing.

  6. Across the street, at the back of the bus in this pic we see what used to be Porter's store, which ran a similar business. Sometime, I think in the 1970's, Koch bought that building too and sold games and hobby stuff there as an extension of his main store. In the 1950's and 60's there were at least EIGHT other stores like this in Oakhurst alone that I can remember. Elliot's on Corrine, Eve's on Strayer, Mary Jo's on Harold, three more on Meridan ave, and two more on Corrine, whose names I cannot remember. I'm pretty sure there are none left.
