Washington Street - 1961

Nice look at downtown Johnstown - Washington Street and the Calvert Reserve sign on the hillside. This photograph is dated 1961 - a very good year I might add.

  1. I think that Calvert sign is attatched to the wire going across the street? look at the actual billboards on Frankstown road on the hill below the Calvert Sign...80% smaller and they are realfull size billboards. If that Calvert Sign were on the hilliside it would have to be Humongous!! Same thing on some Main St. pics, the ads are on the wire going across the street and not on the hillside as they appear.

  2. The signs are definately large and there use to be several of them just below Devil's Rock. What I can remember of them is that they usually advertised beer such as Iron City.

  3. Up by the billboard, that was known as "Devil's Rock". The Gulf sign on the right...they also repaired cars there. One of the mechanics was a black gentlemen named "Ted Johnson" who later started his own shop. My father used to patronize him. He was a super nice guy!!!

  4. Devil's rock must have been a tightly kept secret. I knew nothing of it until a few months ago and I lived here all my life.

  5. A lot of the kids from neighborhoods in the downtown area, like Old Conemaugh Boro and Woodvale, hung out up there. I remember going on a field trip up there in sixth grade. Can't imagine schools doing that today, but we had a great time! Great view of the city from up there.

  6. I was just up there about 4 weeks ago after hearing about it. It's definitely a place I would not want to visit after hours. The debris left there reminds me of an underage drinking area. I think this had the best view of the city.
