Handwritten on the back of this photo - "Railroad Tunnel - Richland Township" - construction keystone lists the date as 1824. I'm not sure of the present day location.
It would just barely be inside Richland Township, but could this be near the bottom of Eisenhower Boulevard, between the Krings Bridge and the nurseries?
This is very, very intriguing. If it is indeed a railroad tunnel (which I'm not certain of) it would pre-date the Staple Bend tunnel by 3-5 years. The Staple Bend is the oldest and first railroad tunnel in the United States.
This may have been some sort of tunnel for the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal, or a feeder canal.
This is likely the Staple Bend Tunnel near Mineral Point.

ReplyDeleteIt looks to me that the date on the keystone is 1828. Not 1824 if that helps identify.

This is very curious indeed.
