I believe you are right. I lived on Chapin Street, right by the American House. Nana's did own a deli in the building adjoining the American House. Then it was bought by Carl Costanzo and became Carl's American House.
I heard an old story about the bar some years ago. The bartender told me around the turn of the 19th century there was a bar fight there and someone threw a silver dollar at someone else and missed. It was supposed to have broken through the backbar somewhere and is still back there to this day, just a story I heard.
Are you sure that it was Carl's American House? Nanna's owned the American House before Carl. The age of the photo will determined that.
