Bringing Yankee Stadium to Johnstown - 1949

Baseball fans watching the 1949 World Series. Upper picture on Park Place and lower at the old Geis Store on Clinton Street. 

The Yankees went on to beat the old Brooklyn Dodgers in five games. History was made in the ninth inning of Game 5, when the Ebbets Field lights were turned on, making it the first World Series game finished under artificial lights. The first scheduled Series night game would not be held until 1971.

And as all us old-time Pirates fans know - that was the series with the Orioles. Game 4 was played at Three Rivers Stadium and it was the first-ever World Series game to be played at night. 

In my baseball obsessed youth - I watched the entire series. I was a Bucs fan from the get go - growing up - listening to Bob Prince on the radio. I can remember going to sleep with my transistor radio under my pillow. I still have all my Pirates autographs from Clemente to Stargell. After the games - you could go over by the dugout and whatever players were there - they'd sign everything from baseballs to pictures.

The Church Ladies

The church ladies of St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Virginia Avenue - taken around 1920 or so. My great-grandmother Rose (Baum) Lenz is in the middle row - second from the left. The Lenz family was one of the founding members of the church in 1905. Wish I knew who the other ladies were - I'd guess most were from Morrellville. Don't know who the lone man is - guess he just wanted to be a church lady too!

HERE'S HOW IT WAS

How does it feel to lay hidden in a submarine on the bottom of the ocean fo 42 hours with the Japs dropping depth charges all around you? Seated above in the center is George Rager, yeoman second class in the Navy, who can and does tell all about it to four WAVE recruiting specialists who are conducting an enrollment drive here now. Yeoman Rager is a son of Mrs. Rose Rager, formerly of Johnstown. Members of the women's branch of the Navy shown, from left to right, are Pharmacist's Mate Virginia Hansen, Specialist Mary Bean, Specialist Dorothea Travis and Yeoman Ember Heyne.

WHO, ME??

Three Catholic High School football fans couldn't believe it was happening to them when The Democrat's photographer singled them out to pose with John Conte just after he arrived in Johnstown last night. Their rapture at actually meeting the singing star was so great they forgot, until after he left them, to ask for his autograph. The girls are left to right, Louise Kirchner, 153 Coal St. Loretta Parker, 140 Gilbert St. and Bernadette Gallagher, 342 Kennedy St.

Oakhurst Girl Honored at Teentimer Broadcast

John Conte, noted singer and master of ceremonies for the "Teen Timer Club" radio program, is shown being welcomed by David Glosser and his daughter Doris and her toy horse. 

Also mentioned is 19 year old - Miss Dorothy Margetta of 409 Decker Avenue - who was selected as the wishing well winner in a national search.
