On that Friday, I was in my eighth grade English class. Standing and reciting was the beautiful (inside and out), Laverta Cashaw and believe it or not, what she was reciting was the poem "Oh Captain, My Captain" which is about the assassination of President Lincoln! Her recitation was interrupted when Mr. Angus, JJJHS principal came over the PA system with these exact words: "President Kennedy has just been shot!" Laverta was in tears and asked if she could stop which the teacher agreed to. I believe the teacher was Miss James. During the next period, we were told JFK had passed away. True story!
