David - I love these old photos of the schools in Johnstown, even if I didn't attend there. I wish someone had a real photo of the old Somerset Street and Meadowvale grade schools from the 50;s and 60's!! I'll keep looking...
I lived right behind this school. It was built in 1909 and closed in 1960. When I attended there (1957-1960) it was grades 1-4. It closed in the fall of 1960 after school started, and we were all transferred to Chandler -- the parents were all very upset that we had to walk all the way down to Chandler. No busing, of course, in those days. It was torn down I think in the late 1970's. Sometime after this pic was taken, the bell tower was changed, and it got a paved school yard with a wall and fence around it. We played whiffle ball and rubber ball baseball there all the time. -- Dave
