Looking for Family

Sometimes the tables are turned and folks in Europe are looking for their ancestors here in Johnstown instead of the other way round. That is the case with a reader from France looking for family originally from Cambria City and Conemaugh. Richard Malec sent these pictures in of his family.

This well loved picture is from 1898 - the little girl is his grandmother Maria who was born in Cambria City. This is a wedding picture - her widowed mother Anna Trzeciak married John Kokoszka. They were married at St. Stephen's Church.
They left Johnstown about 1901 and went back to Europe. His great-grandfather John Kokoszka did come back to Johnstown around 1903 and died while in town sometime between 1904 to 1907. No trace of him has been found as to his cause of death or where he is buried.
This is Julia Trzeciak who lived in Conemaugh - she is the sister of Anna.
This is Boleslaw Hejnar 1918 - 2001 (probably William C. Hejnar). He was the grandson of Julia and lived in Conemaugh.
Conemaugh 1950 - The wedding at the Eagle Hotel Bar of Antoni Hejnar, grandson of Julia Trzeciak. Beside the bride is Zofia Hejnar, daughter of Julia and mother of Antoni. The Hejnar family had the Eagle Hotel Bar in Conemaugh at the corner of Railroad and Locust.
This was taken around 1953 in front of the bar in Conemaugh - Zofia Hejnar, Elzbieta (Elizabeth) Skala and daughter.

Johnstown Area - Trzeciak, Hejnar and Skala families.
Another shot of the families....this sort of looks familiar to me - the background houses I mean.....
Clipping of St. Stephens's Church - Cambria City. If any of the above names are familiar - please let me know by either commenting on this post or emailing me.

Conemaugh Store

Reader Steve Chabra sent in this picture of a store in Conemaugh at the corner of 5th and Main Street. His mother is not sure if her grandmother Julia Babyak owned the store in the 1930's or just worked in it. They add that the store was called Pop's in the 1960's. If any of you readers know anything more about this - please feel free to let me know.

Typhoid Fever - Is Water Responsible?

Three new cases of Typhoid Fever reported at Conemaugh - August 1907 - Miss Mary Robinson of Greeve Street sent to Memorial Hospital - The other two cases are foreigners. My grandfathers Aunt Annie Lenz who was married to her cousin Charles Lenz died of Typhoid in 1905 - while they lived in Conemaugh. In my research - it seems that sections of Conemaugh had it worse than other parts of the city. But having said this - all Johnstown neighborhoods had their own sanitary problems. Especially parts of Morrellville - that lived near butcher shops.
