Do You Remember...

Reader Ann Feyock Klonicki sent in this rare Minersville gem.
Do ou remember when the above group constituted the Millville Hose Co. No. 2. The above photograph was taken Sunday, March 25, 1886.
Left to right: Thomas Marshall, Patrick Dougherty, Dennis Marshall, Michael Marshall, Robert Carney...................Jerome Lynch, William White, Edward Lawrence......
Seated: John O'Keefe, Patrick O'Leary, John Fox, James Carney, John Connelly and John Marshall.
When John Pender got a carload of western horses which ran away, dashed through the lower end of town, out through Minersvile and turned in the lane which goes to the John F. Brehm farm, where someone closed the gate of the lane and the horses were caught and returned to Mr. Pender?
When the Merchants picnics used to be held at the Nineveh (Seward) grove?
When the Great Western band of Pittsburg was engaged to play at the turnfest of the Johnstown Turnverein (Turner's).
When the rivers overflowed one February and ice blocks covered Union Street.
When in Cambria City dancing took place Sunday afternoons at Mrs. Roerg's and Knotz's hotels.
When the Assistance Fire Co. held its annual winter dress ball in old Union hall.

1890's Horse Drawn Fire Wagon

A rare look at one of the old horse drawn fire wagons that was high tech for the 1890's. I have no idea which Johnstown neighborhood this is.
I enlarged it to see if I could tell which company this might be - but you can't tell. But now you can see that on the right hand side behind the wagon is a guy standing next to the call box on the pole. When I was searching the internet to see around what year this wagon was from - I ran across this - CLICK HERE from a site on stuff from Disneyland and as you will see - the wagon matches up with the 1890's.

Vigilant Fire Company

Vigilant Fire Company - Founded 1854 - Kernville - was the Fire Department there before Kernville joined the city. I don't know where exactly this picture was taken. I do know that when the department closed up - the building was made into a clubhouse. So this might be the building. But I also think the building looks like it could belong to part of Island Park (where St. Andrews is now).

Morrellville Fire

I have no idea why my grandfather kept this clipping except maybe these people were friends of his or because the fire was near his house on Chandler:
A city fireman steps from the gutted first floor of a gutted Morrellville home Friday to get a breath of fresh air and is confronted with piles of rubble----once the furniture and other belongs of Mr. and Mrs. Herman E. Escherich, 186 Blaine Street. Firemen from Companies 2 and 5 and the high pressure unit battled the blaze for nearly an hour before bringing it under control.

7th Ward Fire Company

You are looking at a picture of members of the 7th Ward Fire Company. Judging from how they are dressed - I'd say it was some sort of special occassion. But the most interesting thing I find on this shot is the lady wearing the bonnet in the upper right hand side who wanted nothing to do with the taking of this picture.
