Baumer & Bedford Street Playground - 1912

Vintage Repeat - digging a couple of the ones that some of you new readers might not have seen before - like this one - Baumer and Bedford Street Playground. I have to say - this is still one of my top ten favorites and I have a lot of pictures to choose from.

Baumer Street Playground

Another great repeat shot - Baumer Street Playground - it's been a while since I posted this. I'm working on a possible special project and would like some input from you - the reader - because I want it to be different. I asked this question on the Vintage Johnstown Facebook Page. So I am asking it again here. So what pictures and stories do you enjoy the most on this site? For those of you still in town - what modern groups or organizations do you think truly make a difference to our community? Was there a special person like a teacher who by going the extra mile - made a difference in your life? Do you have a famous relative in your family from Johntown?
It's things like this I am looking for - you can either comment here or send me an email at cacicia@hotmail.com.

Oakhurst Playground

Kathy (Voytko) Walko sent in these two old gems of Oakhurst Playground - either from the late 40's or early 50's. Her dad - Dan Voytko is on the lower left on both pictures. That's Brush Avenue with Harold Avenue behind the guys. If you know who the others might be - please let us know!
Here her dad is also on the lower left with Brush Avenue in the background - as to the others - she didn't know - so if you would happen to know who these people are - please let us know.

The caption on the back of the photo reads: Prospect Folk Dancing at the playground - 1912.

Luna Park Ladies - Roxbury - 1918

The caption on the back of the picture reads: 'Aides at playground picnic at Luna Park'. My guess is that these ladies are teacher aides for the playgrounds. Even when I was little. City schools used to have a summer playground program - that all of us enjoyed. We'd ride our bikes down to Bheam school - spend a couple hours there, go across the street to get candy and pop - then go home and play kick the can until it got too dark to see.
This photo dates to around 1918.

Cambria City Storytelling

Summer repeat and one of my top ten favorites. This is yet another photograph of a couple hundred Cambria City kids from 1916. On the back it reads "Miss Colbert and storytelling".

Point Playground

This is such a great picture - because there are just so many things going on. This is the old playground that used to be right next to Point Stadium. And to add to this - on the hillside - the offices for Rolling Mill Mine:

Cambria City Kids - 1916

This is another photograph of Cambria City kids taken around 1916. And the reason I say '16 is that that I know the little girl on the right hand side -  standing with a bow on top of her head. I believe that she is my Aunt Mary (Hanzel) Bobko. I have similar picture of her in the same outfit. And I don't half wonder that maybe some of the other children might have been from McConaughy Street - where my Hanzel family used to live.

Cambria City Playground - Part 1

I posted this picture last year and it is still one of my favorites. This is the old Cambria City Playground - I'd say from around 1920 or so. There are at least 200 kids - just having a ball. This area is still a playground on Broad Street. I have to add that the kid standing in the middle between the two trees along with the kid on his left - both look like they are staring straight into the future at us - in the most wonderful - yet kind of creepy way.

Free Concert - West End Skatepark

Rosie and the Jammers will be playing a free concert this afternoon at the West End Skatepark (Bheam School Playground) from 5 pm to 7pm. Wish I could be there - but instead I received an invite to a Civil War Funeral in Somerset County - which is what I will be covering today.

Luna Park Grandstand - August 15, 1912 - (Roxbury Park)

Luna Park Playground Picnic - August 15, 1912. Nice shot of the grandstand and all the thousands gathered to watch the races on a beautiful summer day at (Roxbury Park).

Luna Park - August 15, 1912 - (Roxbury Park)

Luna Park Playground Picnic - Children's Folk Dancing Group - Attendance 17,000 people with 8,000 children. What's neat about this picture is that there must have been two photographers that day. Note the guy - in front of the people on the fence. He is taking pictures - his tripod is on the upper right hand side. This photograph was taken August 15, 1912 - (Roxbury Park).

Luna Park - Pushmobile Races - (Roxbury Park)

Luna Park Pushmobile Races - August 15, 1912 - Playground Picnic. This one of a kind shot has a great view of the lake and all the boaters enjoying a day of sunshine and rowing on the lake (Roxbury Park).
