West Side Kids - Stock Gray Run

Spent a great Saturday up the mountain with some teachers from West Side Elementary - Mr. Conway, Mr. Sotolsky (thanks for the ride up) and Ms. Kobal and students from West Side Elementary along with members of St. Clair Tremont Club.  Thanks to the club - throughout the school year - the kids helped raised 271 trout in two fish tanks in one of the classrooms.  Tremont Club even provided lunch for the kids when they were done.  A special shoutout to the club - they have many different outdoor programs throughout the year for the kids - from a fishing derby to NRA Day which is coming up in June.  They are helping to train the next generation of anglers and hunters.
Which meant today was the long awaited day where they would all get to release them in a couple different sections of Gray Run.
The kids and their parents got to spend some quality time together in the woods.

Vintage Repeat - digging a couple of the ones that some of you new readers might not have seen before - like this one - Baumer and Bedford Street Playground. I have to say - this is still one of my top ten favorites and I have a lot of pictures to choose from.

Storytime in Cambria City - 1912

Vintage Repeat - Teacher reading a story to all the Cambria City kids around 1912. They are sitting in the back of a park that is still there - next to the old firehall on Broad Street. Blew the picture up so that you can see some of the faces a little bit better. What's touching about this picture is - that if you look close - is a couple of things - that beat up little pail on the left hand side, on the right - is one of the bases for playing ball - but the saddest part of the whole thing - is the complete lack of shoes.

I know it was common - given the economic status of the families - but still when you really stop to think about it in our cleaned up world - going barefoot now would be hard - imagine it back then - between all the horse shit on the streets, dirt from the mill and the general filth of families living on top of and right smack next to each other. Now after having that in your head - kind of make you think - what wonderful afternoon this must of been for the kids - an afternoon of storytelling - for just a couple of brief moments - they could forget about what their own lives were like.

Moxham Pool

Drownings in the Stonycreek River prompted Lorain Steel Company (U.S. Steel) to build this pool adjacent to its Moxham plant in 1920. The pool was a popular place until it suffered extensive damage during the 1936 Flood. It was sold to an oil company for industrial use.

Hey, Kids! Look Who's Here Again - 1951

Today was a happy occasion for youngsters in this community. Jolly old Santa Claus arrived in Johnstown on his annual pre-Christmas visit to officially open the holiday shopping season. He was greeted in Central Park by hundreds of kiddies and by Mayor Walter E. Rose, who presented him the key to the city. The mayor, on behalf of the youngsters voiced a wish that Santa would be here "for a long time." Santa said he would. Then the gay old fellow turned on Christmas lights provided by the Retail Division of the Johnstown Chamber of Commerce. Giving Santa an assist at the light switch at the bas of Central Park's flag tower is three-year-old Karen Debona, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Debona of Vintondale.

A Little Christmas Cheer

I thought on this Christmas Eve - I'd take time to show something that hasn't been done in years. Some very talented school children from Westside Elementary School in Lower Yoder painted holiday scenes on the windows of the old Glosser's building.
