Lower Works

A view you don't often see - part of Lower Works across the river and all the buildings that used to be on the Roosevelt Blvd side. Note where the train tracks used to be - street level. They were that way the whole way up to Laurel Avenue until around 1915 - when they changed their location and built the underpasses. Too many people and animals were getting hit and killed - especially on Fairfield and Delaware Avenues.

At the Point

Looking at all the stuff now gone along Iron Street.

Smoke City

This is how most people remember the mills in Johnstown - taken from Brownstown Hill looking down to McConaughy Street with all the houses and across the river to Iron Street and Bethlehem Steel. This was taken before Roosevelt Blvd was built in the 1920's.
Stone Bridge on far right. Second bridge was also for trains and third is where you can walk or ride across to Iron Street.

Interesting clipping of the first accident of this type at the Stone Bridge in 1924.

A Better View

This picture goes with the one I post yesterday - shows a bit better view of Minersville and Cambria City as a train passes above McConaughy Street - off in the distance.

Stone Bridge Refab - 1929

This is a neat shot of construction crews working on the Stone Bridge in 1929 - with the cranes setting in the first concrete slab on top - off in the distance is Iron street and the mills and the large bridge that used to cross the Conemaugh.

Going for a Ride

Check out the car taking a spin on Iron Street - heading over to the Stone Bridge. What a cool shot - as the photographer is standing on what is now Route 56 - looking over to what is now Festival Park.
Here's a better look at the area - Haws is just off on the left hand side of the Stone Bridge.

Trolley Time

I am in love with this shot of the intersection of Roosevelt Blvd and Washington Street with the Stone Bridge in the background.

Washington Street Bridge

Great view of the Washington Street Bridge - with Haws Refactory on the hillside.
I blew it up a bit for a better view.

The City I Call Home

This picture of Downtown Johnstown makes me happy and yet kind of sad at the same time...but I don't know why that is....you can click on the picture to enlarge it.

High Above Cambria City

A reader sent in this shot - looking down from Minersville to above Cambria City sometime in the 1940's. Minersville Bridge is closest - then the walking bridge to the mill and Stone Bridge off in the distance. There is even a coal powered train off in the distance heading into town.

Roosevelt Blvd

This is a look at the construction of Roosevelt Blvd in the 1920's  - with the Washington Street Bridge and Point Stadium in the background. This was constructed to help ease the traffic problem along Iron Street.
What's so cool about this about this picture is you get to see a rare look at the extra set of seats on the old Point Stadium before the fire. This is about as clear as I could get it after I blew it up.
