Cambria Tribune - December 1853

Cambria Tribune - December 1853
A fire occurred on the morning of Friday, the 9th in Wm. Orr's Cabinet Ware Rooms. It was communicated to the roof from the stove-pipe, but after doing some damage and effectually scaring the good people of Johnstown, it was fortunately quelled. When will our Town Fathers become aroused to the importance of keeping our fire-engines always ready and always in repair? When?
-------------------------------------
The dedication of the German Lutheran Church took place, according to arrangement, on Sabbath last. The ceremonies were quites solemn and imposing.
--------------------------------------
The California fever has not yet subsided  in town. Several young men, influenced perhaps, by the favorable reports concerning the diggings brought by returned Cambrians, have determined to leave about the first of February. We admire their spirit.
Married: John Patton and Sophia Snyder along with assorted ads.

The Other Side

The other side of the brochure from the previous post.

"The Friendly City"

OBJECT TO BLOCK AT FAIRFIELD AVENUE

Forgot I had this - folks in Morrellville want what they want and they still do. This is from around 1915 or so.

Long Gone Places

A repeat look at Pre-1889 Johnstown. Union Graveyard is now the site of the War Memorial.

Custom-Built Seating Local Firm's Product

One of the more unusual of Johnstown's diversfied industries is the National Booth & Lounge Manufacturing Company of 100 Station Street, Ferndale.
The fir manufactures custom-built seating for hotels and restaurants, clubs and institutios and the salon, office and home. It is a wholesale operation, selling its products through dealers in most of the Eastern States.

At present, 14 persons are employed by the company. The annual payroll is $50,000. C.R. Mazer, who founded the company in 1946, is manager of the Station Street plant.
Originally, the firm occupied a plant on D Street. About 1947 the operations were moved to South Fork, although a show room was maintained in Johnstown. The Ferndale plant was purchased in 1951 and the firm moved its equipment and office there.

National's products include a line of breakfact lounges for the private home as well as seating and upholstery supplies for the larger public businesses. The firm, through its dealers, has designed and installed the equipment in a number of clubs and restaurants in the area, including the new VFW Home on Vine Street, theSomerset Dairy Dell and the Johnstown Seafood Restaurant, Main Street.

December 27, 1945 - Last Newspaper

Today marks the final World War Two Newspaper. I published 896 papers altogether in a project that ran over three years. Hope you enjoyed them as much as I did. I thought I knew a great deal about the war when I started - but reading the happenings in a day to day basis taught me so much more than any history book could.

Delivery Time

Another cool repeat - you are looking at the fleet of delivery trucks for the Harris-Boyer Bakery in Morrellville.

Investigating Death of Brownstown Woman

Going thru my stuff - scanning more things in - ran across this item. The death of Mrs. Rose Von Alt of Kennedy Street - Brownstown. I forgot to mark a year - but this was in stuff from 1915 - so it's close to around that time.

Street Cleaner Time

The latest in street cleaners - 1930's style - with city officials in front of Cochran. The designer must have gotten his idea from a WWI tank - because that's what they look like to me.

Got Gas

Another repeat today. They don't build them like this anymore. Amoco-Gas at the end of the Napoleon Street Bridge. Union Cemetery would be directly behind the photographer and Joe Johns is off camera to the left. You can also see the Franklin Street Bridge off in the distance.

Johnstown Fire Department

Another favorite repeat - Johnstown Fire Department in the 1920's in the midst of switching from horse to gasoline horsepower.

Tune Time

One of the many local ethnic bands - from the 1920's. For some reason this looks like it was taken at the CFU on Broad Street before they remodeled it. They are still probably playing up on the third floor.
