A pike (fish) caught in Iowa had a Johnstown PA Bank Book in its stomach. Believe or not. 

Big cinder explosion at Cambria Iron causes all kinds of damage. 

Minersville Boarding House - Albert Elgick stabbed with red hot poker by Andrew Robinus. Officer Boucher was the one to respond to the call.

When John Pender got a carload of western horses which ran away, dashed through the lower end of town, out through Minersvile and turned in the lane which goes to the John F. Brehm farm, where someone closed the gate of the lane and the horses were caught and returned to Mr. Pender?

When the Merchants picnics used to be held at the Nineveh (Seward) grove?

When the Great Western band of Pittsburg was engaged to play at the turnfest of the Johnstown Turnverein (Turner's).

When the rivers overflowed one February and ice blocks covered Union Street.

When in Cambria City dancing took place Sunday afternoons at Mrs. Roerg's and Knotz's hotels.

When the Assistance Fire Co. held its annual winter dress ball in old Union hall.

Scott Thomas sent in these shots. He grew up on Benshoff Hill. They were taken by his uncle with his old Polaroid camera. Loved that camera - even more - loved the smell the pictures gave off as they developed in your hand. This shot shows parts of Minersville and Cambria City.

Free Poland Society - 1953

 

It was in 1932 that members of the Johnstown Free Poland Society gathered at St. Casimer's Church to observe the 25th anniversary of the organization--a unit of the Polish National Alliance. In the foreground were members of the society-sponsored baseball team, then known as Minersville PNA.

In the second row were officers and leaders of the association. Left to right - they are: Frank Stasik, Stanley Cyburt, John Schultz, John Moskal, Dr. C.S. Grabiak, Dr. B.W. Grabiak, Rev. Walter Finke, Rev. Walter Lewczyk, Joseph Yesh, Stanley Jagiela, Anthony Cyburt, John Lis, Val Golmulka, Ignace Jackel, Tom Gzegorczyk, Walter Rzaza and Joseph Cyburt.

Sorry but the others have no names listed. But they are standing on the steps of the old St. Casimer's Church. Click on the picture to enlarge.
