The thing I remember about the years leading up to the '77 flood was how much optimism and pride there was in Johnstown. You had the All-America City designation, the new 56 bypass, an emerging downtown skyline, an exciting and winning hockey team and the movie it inspired, a new mall with a still-bustling downtown, the reversal of Bethlehem's planned shutdown, a new UPJ campus. Was it really only 40 years ago?
