Swank's and Freie Presse

Old Swank's Store ad along with an ad for Johnstown Freie Press which used to publish a German paper. I have clippings from the paper, but not a whole paper. Wish I did.

Mary (Hanzel) Bobko

This is a rare picture of my grandmother's older sister Mary (Hanzel) Bobko 1912 - 2002 and her husband John Bobko. She grew up on Barron Avenue before the Hanzel family moved to Stackhouse Street. This is their wedding picture - and I find this picture beautiful in so many ways. My cousins have very few pictures of themselves growing up during the Depression because money was so tight. And I know that alot of what Mary has on from shoes to jewelry were borrowed for this sitting. She was one of the kindest people I have ever known.

Our family may not have alot of money, but we do have a sense of humor. When Mary died in 2002, the family gathered down at the old homestead on Stackhouse Street. While sitting on the porch, Mary's daughter Karol commented on how pretty my Aunt Marge's roses were - and asked her if she fed them. Aunt Marge thought we were talking about the rabbit she was feeding and she said she fed it sauerkraut and mashed potatoes - etc - not realizing they were asking about the rose bush. Everyone had a good laugh over that.

Morrell School - Barron and D Street

This is an old photo of Morrell School - Barron Avenue and D Street in Morrellville. Now the present location of St. Francis Church. Some members of my grandfather's family went there including his sister Margaret (Lenz) Gloor 1897 - 1967. She is the small child in front. Also on the picture is brother Albert Lenz and sister Lena (Lenz) Pittman.
This cardboard picture card was taken at their old house at 1313 B Street - this picture dates from around 1900. I have Margaret's old school book from Morrell School - 1909.
And the best page of all:
I just love stuff like this. The oldest inscription of this type I have is from 1876. I'll have to dig that out and post it.

WJAC-TV Studio - 1964

An interesting look of what was then the new WJAC-TV Studio A. Which at one time was the largest studio on the East Coast (it might still be - I'll have to check again). This photo courtesy of Retired Chief Videographer Lanny Vrooman. This is the studio where the news is now done.
On the right hand side - where the camera is point to a weather map - that is where the area where Ultamatte (the green screen) is now and where the wx boys do their stuff.
Directly behind the people is the kitchen set - that hasn't changed much and is still located there.
The rest of the set is taken up by all the Romper Room props. That area now contains the film and tape archive. Directly in front of this area is where the current news set is.
