This is the original St. Bernard's Church and rectory, built on the hill above the St. Bernard's School. The rectory is now a private house. The church was used as a hall and for the Hastings High School basketball games until mid 1950 when it was demolished. The "new" St. Bernard's Church was built in 1924. This white frame church is typical of the type that Peter Strittmatter built throughout the county. I think his sons, The Strittmatter Brothers Lumber Company [Anthony, Aloysius and Paul], built his one about 1889. They also rebuilt the St. Boniface Church after a fire about 1895. It is the only example left.
