Amelia Earhart at Cochran - 1929

Scanning this in today - I did a double take - this is so cool! That's Amelia Earhart at Cochran - who would have thought it. This picture is in a bunch of others - all from Cochran - from various years. I didn't notice her at first - looking through all of them quickly the other day when I picked them up. It was only when I was messing around after scanning today - that I noticed her. I guess the small airplane underneath the banner should have been a clue to me....
Only last week I was talking about her at work and my co-worker stopped off at a bookstore in Gettysburg to pick me up a 1960's era book on her disappearance. I was talking to him about a Florida teenager that might have been the last person to hear Amelia's distress calls - for more on that CLICK HERE.
I wonder where else she stopped off at - when she flew into the old Westmont Airport - for more on that post CLICK HERE. This just goes to show you - sometimes I don't even realize what I have underneath my own nose. Guess I better look at the rest of the pictures more closely.

1936 Flood - Portage - Cambria County

Another rare look at the damage done by the 1936 Flood - sent in by reader Jason Richardson. This is Portage - it's not often that you get a look at damage in another neck of the county.

State of the Art - 1964

RCA - The Most Trusted Name in Television - TK-60 - Studio Cameras - WJAC-TV - 1964. The station had a deal worked out with RCA - they were one of the 'test stations' for all new RCA products. By the way - those camera pedestals were used up until a few years ago - that's how long they lasted.

Maple Park Elementary - Destroyed by Fire

Another local landmark lost to fire this week - the old Maple Park Elementary School in Johnstown. For more on this fire http://www.wjactv.com/news/news/crews-battle-blaze-former-johnstown-school/nHMQB/. I posted this image awhile back - it's been a bad week - two landmarks destroyed. Luckily in both cases - no one was hurt.

Hotel Waldorf - Portage - Destroyed by Fire

I posted this image a while back - but the I am re-posting this because Hotel Waldorf in Portage was destroyed by fire earlier this week. For more on that http://www.wjactv.com/news/news/evacuations-ordered-after-fire-breaks-out-portage/nHQc4/.

Cochran Kids - 1920's

Cochran Band - 1920's - I would say late 20's - sorry there were no names written on the back of this large 8 x 10. It also had some damage which I fixed - I usually don't do much to the pictures - because I like them as is - but this had stapler issues - that got in the way of enjoying it. I have about 10 or more in this lot I got last week - they were all taken at Cochran - some have years and some don't. So stay tuned for more.
I can't put my finger on it - but there is something about this photograph that I like. I have no idea why the picture is marked with a checkmark.
