Interesting! My maternal grandmother survived as she was at a Memorial Day picnic the day the dam broke and they were up high on a hill overlooking Johnstown, and she watched from there as the awful event happened. So thankful or otherwise I would not have been born. I never heard her speak of it, and only know of it from my mother telling me, although I lived in the house with both my mother and her mother (who was about 18 years old at the time of the flood), and her husband built the house my mother was born in. Maybe that is why he was in that business, as I am sure there must have been a great need. She was born in 1912. That house was still standing last time I had information about it from there--the back house at 809 Pine St., Johnstown.
