Johnstown High School's athletic history dates from the organization of the football team in 1897. In that first season, the schoolboys playing a sport which had not yet caught the public fancy, won one game and lost another. J.G.E. Smedley, standing in the rear, coupled his teaching duties with those of coach.

Seated, First Row - Merrill Baker, now understood to be living in Cleveland, Ohio; Jack Henderson, who was Captain of the team in 1897, 98 and 99 and James Geer. In the Upper Rows are: Carl Resley, David Cohoe, George Steele, Francis B. Hamilton, William Kennedy, Jacob B. Kramer (Mgr.), Ross Breniser, Harry Bole, Charles Coleman, Robert Judy and Rufus Blough.
