CWV - Post 954

West End Auxiliary 954, Catholic War Vets, presented the vets' unit with a new American Flag and post colors on Sept. 29, 1950. Miss Margaret Trosan, auxiliary president, presented the colors to post Commander William Schilling. Rev. Father Bartley McAteer, then post chaplain is shown center.

A lot of people remember me from my days as a bartender at the CWV in the late 1980's and 1990's. Friday nights would be me behind the bar and Kitty (McGinty) Hanzel working her Irish magic in the kitchen - all of us surrounded by vets from WW II, Korea and Vietnam. Since it was a sunken bar - you couldn't help but hear the conversations going around along with the war of words at times. But for the most part - it would be about the usual stuff all of us talk about. But every once in a while - the old boys would talk about WW II and tell their stories well past closing time. It was during those moments - listening to their stories - that brought the war home to me.

Nowadays - the post is closed due to lack of membership and we continue to lose our WW II vets each and everyday - but I still carry the memories of some of the guys who would stop by for a beer and signup.
