This freshly-baked bread is a mouth-watering sight as it is removed from the ovens of the Harris-Boyer Company. Gingerly picking up one of the piping hot loaves is Nick Velemirovich an employe of the bakery. The big West End plant today has ovens capable of turning out as many as 2,700 loaves of bread on hour. Anywhere from 20,000 to 25,000 bread units are baked daily. When the firm was started in Johnstown nearly 60 years ago, all of the baking was done by the wives of the founders. In those days the baked products were delivered by horse and buggy. Today the baking firm employs more than 200 persons and boasts an annual payroll of about $800,000 ($6,632,810)
A fleet of 88 trucks delivers its bread and pastries to homes, stores and restaurants in a six-county district.
Note: while scanning this picture - I was pleasantly surprised because I knew Nick from the CFU and Band Hall.
Also, I know I speak for many of us folks from the West End - to this day - I still miss the smell of freshly baked bread that used to hover over Morrellville - like a cloud of goodness - especially Sunday mornings in the old days - you used to have to fast before getting communion - walking down the alley to St. Francis - talk about hunger pains....
