Yoder Falls - June 21, 1914

This is pretty cool! It isn't too often that you can date an old picture exactly to the day. You can thank my grandfathers two sisters - who are in this picture taken June 21, 1914 - at Yoder Falls. I believe these are members of a church group from St. Paul's on Virginia Avenue.

Awesome picture! Where the heck is Yoder Falls? That's some family history I didn't know about!

Yoder Falls is out by Carpenter Park in Somerset County. It used to be very accessible. 219 cut off the trails to it. If you're on 219 going south, it's on the left at the far end of McNally Bridge.

Yoder falls is still accessible. Go to the boat launch off carpenters park road. Cross the railroad bridge and look for a trail to your right. It turns into a quad trail. Follow the trail up the river. You can use the sewer pipe bridges to cross the river when necessary. You will understand what that means if you go. After maybe 15 or 20 minutes you can see the lower falls. As you continue up the trail you will see the brush cleared away on the left side. It's a pretty steep climb down but not that far. There is a pretty well defined path once you get into the woods. I was able to find it as we walked through the woods near the creek. As you follow the path there are several spots that get you near the river to view different areas of the falls. Be very careful. The rocks are somewhat slippery and the fall to the river would be quite far. I would say it was worth the trip. I will say that I have a lot of hiking knowledge but little first hand experience. This was my first hike in years and it was not bad at all. Wear good shoes and take a walking stick.
