From the Diary of Mrs. Elizabeth Oldham of Moxham
Monday - January 20, 1947
Clifford and Harry worked some at the bath room and I went up and bought a Horton washer off of one of Leona's neighbors for $45.00
Note: I went looking for a picture of a Horton and this is the best I could come up with - I have no idea which kind of machine Mrs. Oldham would have gotten second hand - some of these were gas powered.
The Horton Company, of Fort Wayne , Indiana , produced the electric machine. This machine features a powered wringer which could be swung around its post to allow positioning over external rinse tubs. The wringer also has a safety release. Being one of the Horton company's first electric models there seemed to be less than total confidence in electric power. An advertising pamphlet attests to the importance of this machine. "A Horton Washer will add many years to your life. It will save your health-- keep the wrinkles out of your face--keep you youthful".
